From One Tragedy to Another -- Just as Their Documentary on 9/11 Volunteers Opens, Filmmakers Are Summoned to the South to 'Answer the Call'

09/08/2005

Los Angeles (ContentDesk) September 8, 2005 -- Their new film is "Answering the Call: Ground Zero's Volunteers," but filmmakers Lou Angeli and Bunny Dubin were not expecting to be called for duty amidst promotion of the film's release on September 9. Their documentary on how everyday heroes came together in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy premiered Thursday in San Diego and they were gearing up for its theatrical release this Friday, when the call came in from the United States Fire Administration. They had been summoned to help in the Hurricane Katrina search and rescue and to film the relief effort. The two will be heading to Mississippi on Monday to join the damage assessments teams and to do live feeds for network television news. They've had to put on hold other planned actions for their film, which is narrated by Ground Zero volunteer Kathleen Turner, to help contribute to what will likely be the largest rescue project in U.S.

Angeli, who has produced more than 200 disaster-training films for FEMA, the U.S. Fire Administration, and state and local fire-rescue agencies, was one of the only videographers permitted to film at Ground Zero. His never-before-seen footage takes viewers behind the tightest of security checkpoints in the emergency village that became home to thousands of volunteers and rescuers at Ground Zero. But for now Angeli, also a 25-year veteran volunteer EMT and firefighter, and Dubin, a Ground Zero volunteer coordinator, are doing what they do best — helping others in need. "We have a lot more work to do to launch our documentary properly, but when lives are at stake you take action," said Dubin.

"We've been on the phones to help deploy some of the emergency personnel who were in the film and to secure supplies. Lou and I will personally lend a hand for as long as we possibly can." "The media has focused on problems with local and federal response, but we have no political agenda," said Angeli. "Our coverage will be about the tens of thousands of volunteers nationwide, who dropped everything to come to the assistance of their fellow citizens." "Answering the Call: Ground Zero's Volunteers" will be released in select cities across the U.S. on Sept. 9 and the DVD will be available on various websites as well as AMAZON.com on Sept 11, 2005.
